Most Prophecies armour is purple+green. I'm not sure about other armours, but this place likely has the answer.

purple +green works on some of the weapons as well, it sometimes helps to add red or brown to the mix, but not always. Of course some items you cannot get to look black no matter what you do.
*hint* I always have at least one of each dye color on hand so that I can check color combinations whenever I want to dye something. |

you have a specific armor that you're looking to dye? different armors dye differently.

It really depends on the armor. Monk armors dyed purple+green almost always turn some shade of blue. Mesmer Tyrian armor (female) dyed default gray looks almost exactly like old black. Collect 3 of each of the cheap dyes, and do some experimenting in preview.
The awful detail-destroying new black is hard to replicate, and why would you want to? I only use black when I simply HAVE to darken a mix and have exhausted my other options; I wouldn't dream of using it alone. |

on some armors (mesmer sunspear comes to mind) the odd combination of purple + Purple + Purple + grey works
works like old black, god bless it ----------------- but yeah If I want stuff black I just exmod it >< then again most of my armor sets are unique anyway - mod is ftw |

However, it is much more difficult for the eye to distinguish true cyan and true magenta plus it is more difficult to make the pigments for those colors. So artists adopted blue and red instead of cyan and magenta. These two plus yellow and green are sometimes called the "psychological primaries." For the most part those colors work just fine in real life. Your computer, however, uses the cyan/yellow/magenta color wheel [although, because your computer screen uses light addition to make colors rather than light subtraction (which is how your printer ink works) its colors are the complimentary colors for the c/y/m color wheel - that is red/blue/green.] One difficulty with the GW dye system is that it uses the red/orange/yellow/green/blue/purple color wheel we tend to use in real life but the actual program has to use the true color wheel of red/magenta/blue/cyan/green/yellow I have no idea how they made it work to begin with but considering the difficulty of translating between the two color schemes it sort of amazing they got it to work at all. |
